Hello Church Family,
New City Catechism Q#9
What does God require in the first, second, and third commandments?
First, that we know and trust God as the only true and living God. Second, that we avoid all idolatry and do not worship God improperly. Third, that we treat God’s name with fear and reverence, honoring also his Word and works.
“You shall have no other gods before me.”
I was reminded this week that all the commands in the 10 Commandments are given in the second person singular. You – singular; not you – plural. The 10 Commandments are intensely personal – a foretaste of the New Covenant where the Holy Spirit now indwells the Christian and writes God’s law on our hearts. Also, the preposition “before” in this commandment is a preposition of place, not of position, preference, or time. You shall have no other gods in my (God’s) presence. And since we believe that God is omnipresent, there is no place where He is absent, we are reminded of God’s patience with sinners as He graciously calls them into His presence.
